This coming Sunday 22nd May from 3pm you can catch JONNY HEPBIR GYPSY JAZZ GUITARIST at the excellent Fez Margate. Located at 40 High Street CT9 1DS, this quirky Margate venue is popular with locals and visitors alike. Known for its fine selection of quality ales, cool atmosphere and eclectic music events, I'm looking forward to bringing the swing once more at this iconic Kent establishment!
Things have been pretty busy over the last month with private and public dates in and around Kent and the South East.
Last Sunday morning I had an early bird gig for the folks at Academy FM in Thanet, playing a set of swing classics for their fund raising day.
Here's a pic from the event. It was early, but I'm smiling! Always happy when I'm playing Django Reinhardt style guitar no matter what time of the day or night.
After a short lunch break I was off to nearby Ramsgate to play at an afternoon Birthday Party at the fab Eats n' Beats Cafe in Addington Street. This is another eclectic Thanet venue that has all types of music, spoken word and art events going on. Known for excellent food and cool vibes, the cafe is owned and run by the lovely Meredith and Keith, who are no strangers to the live music world. Meredith managed top global bands from her London based management agency and Keith used to play bass in seminal New Wave pop band Squeeze alongside Jools Holland, Chris Difford and Glen Tilbrook.
For this booking, I was playing in a Gypsy Jazz Duo with my good friend and super guitarist, Roberto Soto. Roberto had just come back from an intense weekend coaching session with Dutch Gypsy Jazz master Lollo Meier in Holland. So he was firing on all cylinders for the party. Lollo was the first Gypsy I ever played with back in 1997, pure old school Django from the Fapy Lafertin style of guitar.
