BROADSTAIRS JAZZ FEST REVIEW
Gypsy Jazz at Broadstairs Jazz Fest! What can I say? I had an incredible time performing at packed events throughout the weekend with various lineups. Now in its third year, the festival was very well attended, attracting people from all over the country to enjoy top-quality jazz.
Over three days, I had four performances, starting with the METRO VIPERS at The Magnet to kick off the weekend. Despite our 4:30 pm start on a Friday, we expected a sparse crowd, but it was actually packed!
Playing for everyone here was a fantastic experience. We delivered swing jazz, Latin rhythms, vocal harmonies, and engaging interplay, among other highlights.
Here's a short video from the afternoon, there's a lot going on here!
The next day my first gig was an afternoon fiery Gypsy Jazz Guitar Duo with Dave Archer at Foliage. This a crazy place, plants everywhere and banging cocktails!
Dave is Jamie Cullum's guitarist amongst others (Clare Teal, Kansa Smittys etc) and we both had great fun playing Django Reinhardt and Gypsy Jazz favourites. I hope to work again with him sometime, we really hit it off.
Here's a short video from our session...mmmm fiery.
Literally straight after this gig, I'd been booked in to play a couple of Solo Gypsy Jazz sets at The Dog & Sparrow just up the road.
I was feeling a little tired after an intense session with Dave so was kind of hoping for a mellow time. That didn't happen, the place was heaving so I had to pull out the stops for this one too.
Here's another short clip from my Solo set.
Finally the next day there was a rowdy gig at Delilah's Bar with LOULOU SWING. I played here a couple of times last year and Brian and his staff made us feel very welcome.
We were joined on this one by the incredible Peter Long on saxophone. Always good to hook up with the renowned maestro band leader and even better when we get to play together.
Here's a short video of us performing 'Comes Love' with Peter Long.
What a fantastic conclusion to a wonderful weekend! Hopefully, we can repeat it next year. A huge thank you to Will from The Magnet for organising everything, coordinating with all the musicians and venues involved. It was a lot of work but an undeniable success!
