With the rise in popularity for Gypsy Jazz and all things Django Reinhardt among guitarists and musicians, monthly ‘jam’ sessions are becoming increasingly popular. In Kent, I’ve been running one such session every month for the past year and a half. Django Jam was set up so musicians of all ages and abilities could meet up and have fun playing #Gypsyjazz in a relaxed, informal atmosphere. Even if anyone was new to the style it is a good way to learn and pick up tips/ideas from other players there.
Django Jam is usually held on a Tuesday near the end of every month at the Frog And Orange Pub in Shatterling, Kent just outside of Canterbury. The nice people there stick us in the backroom from 8pm to 11pm and let us get on with it! It’s all very chilled and good fun. Why not come down and see what it’s all about? We have plenty of non-musicians who just pop in for a drink, social and listen to the music. One of our regular visitors every month who lives close by, is renowned luthier and Gypsy Jazz guitar boff, Killy Nonis. He’s always good for tech tips on the Selmer guitar copies generally used in the style and many of the top players use his hand-built guitars.
No amps, drums or ‘slots’ to do your thing, just purely acoustic and relaxed like all good Gypsy Jazz Jams.
