The JONNY HEPBIR TRIO had a great gig recently at Sidewinder in Brighton, Sussex. It was great to have a mid-week session with the guys and crack through some of our more complex song arrangements in preparation for the year!
One of our favourite pieces to play is 'Rythmes Gitans' by French accordionist Jo Privat from the album 'Manouche Partie' a classic from the 1960's and one of the best Gypsy Jazz Albums from that era.
The guitarist on the recording was Matelo Ferret who along with his brothers, Baro and Sarane, played alongside Django Reinhardt in his group for many years. All the brothers were performing/recording stars in France in their own right through the 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's.
The lineage continues to this day with Matelo's sons, the fabulous Boulou and Elios, still performing regularly in France and further afield.
The family all had/have their own take on 'Jazz Manouche' and well worth checking out.
We've been playing this tune for years and it's always fun!
