GYPSY JAZZ GUITAR WORKSHOP
An acoustic guitar workshop designed for players of all ages and abilities, focusing on the captivating and intricate style of Django Reinhardt, which flourished in the 1930s and 1940s.
Django Reinhardt (1910-1953). Despite suffering terrible injuries after a fire at the age of 18, this Belgium-born guitarist went on to develop a unique way of playing that even today is revered and copied all over the world. His innovative approach to guitar playing has left a lasting legacy in the world of music.
Although the music Django played had origins in early jazz, the guitar techniques he employed can be applied to all types of guitar playing where a plectrum is used. This versatility makes the skills learned in this workshop beneficial for a wide range of musical styles, from folk to rock and beyond.
This workshop will focus on the two main principles of Django-style, rhythm accompaniment and melody/solo playing. Participants will learn how to create the vibrant, swinging rhythm that characterises Gypsy jazz, as well as how to construct engaging melodies that can captivate an audience.
No theory or reading is necessary as the 'folk' tradition of this style is very much aural. This means that participants will learn through listening and playing, making the experience accessible and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of their background in music theory.
The emphasis will be on playing and having fun through learning. The workshop is designed to foster a relaxed and encouraging atmosphere where participants can feel free to express themselves musically without the pressure of formal instruction.
There will be lots of cool tips and tricks to take away and apply to your playing even if you've had no experience of this style before. Participants can expect to leave with not only new skills but also a fresh perspective on their guitar playing and a deeper appreciation for the art of Gypsy jazz.
Workshop Requirements – An acoustic guitar & plectrum.
The workshop is from 2-6pm but attendees are asked to arrive at 1.45pm for tea/coffee and an introductory chat.
This early arrival will not only provide an opportunity to enjoy refreshments but also to meet fellow participants, share musical experiences, and set the tone for an engaging and interactive workshop. It's a perfect way to break the ice and get everyone excited for the musical journey ahead!
