Pumping Gypsy swing in the style of Django Reinhardt is a big hit at Swanage Jazz Festival
Summer’s definitely here now!
The scorching weather has generally held over a few weeks which was fab as the JONNY HEPBIR GYPSY SWING TRIO made the journey down to Swanage in Dorset for a fantastic event.
So happy to have been booked for all three days at the all-new, super-improved Swanage Jazz Festival!
Running since the 90’s, this popular coast-based festival had suffered a bit in the last few years due to one thing or another. At one point it looked like it was going to fold completely, then fortunately into the arena stepped UK jazz guitar supremo Nigel Price. Nigel took on board the full weight of Festival Director and over some stress-filled months, re-launched the 2018 edition with new ideas, hip-programming and an up to date social media and crowd-funding campaign.
The weekend was a great success thanks to his efforts, we were very chuffed to be part of a progressive jazz line-up encompassing many different styles within the genre.
All three of our performances were really well received by the audiences, won us some new fans and helped bring the band to the attention of a few new promoters.
Here we are at the Black Swan on our third venue on the Sunday.
We had a bonus performance at the Mowlem Theatre when we were asked to back up Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club jam night leader, Andy Davies on trumpet.
There was an extra surprise when our old friend, accordionist Pete Watson suddenly appeared and joined us to make it a pumping quintet!

We had a fantastic time, playing, seeing old friends, making new ones and getting to see some amazing concerts by top musicians.
Our big thanks to Nigel for an incredible effort in making the event happen and for making sure all the musicians and attendees were looked after.
