JONNY HEPBIR GYPSY JAZZ TRIO at Trading Boundaries in Sheffield Green, East Sussex. Featuring the violin talents of Matt Holborn.
We had a groovy time recently with another booking at this fab venue. The weather was really good so we were outside in front of the big Buddha head. There were two other gigs on the same day so we were pretty whacked at the end of it all.
I don't get to play with Matt as much these days as I'd like, he's been touring with Bill Bailey and even a stint with the legendary Chaka Khan!
It's always great to see him, hang and of course, play lots of Gypsy Jazz.
Here's a short swinging video from this first session. Hopefully we can get to do it all again later this year.
With the VE Day celebrations over the last week it was great to have a range of bookings at various events around Kent.
I thought it would be good to have a 40's style suit to look the part. A good friend of mine has a couple of original era suits which he dropped round for me to try. I actually couldn't believe how heavy they were! Also a tad large, I looked like David Byrne dancing in his big suit in the 'Stop Making Sense' film.
How people walked around in them, especially during the Summer, is beyond me. I couldn't deal with the weight at all. I had a look online and found this repro beauty for £134! Originals were in excess of £600 and this one is light as a feather, good quality too.

PUBLIC GIGS
I'm back at Chatham Maritime Food & Drink Festival this year on Bank Holiday Monday 26th May from 4pm closing the event this time.

As part of the VE Day events this year, I played a couple of gigs with Loulou Swing Trio in Sandwich, Kent.
We did 'Sandwich Salutes The 40's' on the Quay, which we also played at last year. This is a very popular event with all types of period gear (like the full-sized Hawker Hurricane we're standing in front of), swing dancing, food, drink and lots of activities for people to see and do.
Then on actual VE Day we were in the town square getting filmed by BBC South East and entertaining the troops before the spotlight was turned on at 9.30pm.
I'm not wearing my super 40's suit as the weather was seriously bitter in the evenings.
Here's a plug for a great event I'm planning on attending over the weekend of 23rd-25th May in the Midlands near Rutland.
I spent over fifteen years attending the annual Django Reinhardt Festival in Samois Sur Seine in France ( I performed there in 2013) and pretty much all the British Gypsy Jazz Festivals over a twenty year period either as a booked artist or spectator.
It's been a long time since I just went to hang out, watch and of course, jam till I drop. Time marches on and I don't want to regret not going to an event and miss seeing lots of old friends again.
One of my dearest/oldest Gypsy Jazz friends sadly passed away at the end of last year and we were discussing before that we should go to a couple this year as we kept putting it off.
So I'm heading north to attend the Django In The Bay Festival, in it's 4th year I believe. I've heard it's a really good event and I know the people responsible for it. This year they've got Angelo DeBarre and the astounding Amati Schmitt amongst others.
I've turned down a couple of gigs but sometimes it's worth it. A good few of us will be toasting Steve Royall's memory and playing an obscene amount of Django-style in his name.
Hoping to meet lots of new friends also, come and say hi if you're going.
